Russian ISP Caravan.ru Attacks

Our server and several sites have been under attack by a Russian ISP called Caravan.ru over the last week. Its called trackback spam and this ISP, Caravan.ru has a long history of flooding websites with trackback spam. A simple search of Google will bring back proof of many years of abuse to blog comment type websites.

Most of the compliants I found were from the owners of Wordpress sites. In our case, it was my fault the door was left open. I was running a beta version of a comment component and the spam prevention part of the software was not working, the older version received no trackback spam.

Caravan.ru managed to bring down our server for an hour or two. They hit a couple of sites with about 3000 track back spams each. I didn't find the big one of over 50,000 trackback spam links until the following day.

It started again a few days after the first attack and I recorded over 3000 visits to one site in a few hours. Much like a Dos attack where they nail you so hard from different IP addresses and the result is your site slows down and the people you want to visit can't. Plus the links they are submitting are some of the most sick garbage you have ever seen in your life.

We have taken steps to prevent any further attacks, like turning off the trackback feature but, since it is just a 'bot' or piece of software that is tryin g to submit the trackback spam, they continued to hit the server anyway.

Security reasons prevent discus

sing all the steps taken to prevent future attacks. I was able to watch and see all the different IP addresses from Caravan.ru coming in every few seconds and even showing their customers site names and IP's too.

Got to feel sorry for all the good people in Russia who are using this company and are not aware of how they do business. Real pointless stuff that will not do anyone any good.

Not sure what there point is since the links are all 'No follow' anyway, which means they will serve no benifit for SEO ranking. Whatever the reason, that door will not be left unlocked again.
